ABOUT Alonso Edward

Alonso’s 2009 World Championships run of 19.81 set new track standards. It was the fastest ever by a South American and he became the youngest to pick up a World Championships 200m medal. But perhaps most significantly his time was a world age-19 best, outstripping the 19.88 set by none other than Usain Bolt!

The double Panamanian record-holder followed up with fourth at the 2015 Worlds and seventh at the 2016 Olympics.

Alonso has competed at four consecutive editions of the Worlds and both Olympics since 2009 and has gone below the 20-second barrier on seven occasions.

He was also overall Diamond League winner for the 200m every year from 2014-2016. In 2017 he again competed at the World Championships, finishing fourth in his heat of the 200m.
