ABOUT Marquis Dendy

Marquis Dendy is one of the world’s best combination long and triple jumpers, his career so far highlighted by 2016 World Indoor gold in the former.

The American made a breakthrough when winning the NCAA indoor long jump title in 2013 with 8.28m and later that year a fifth place at the US Championships earned him a berth at what would be the first of his three world championships thus far.

He scored two impressive long jump-triple jump doubles at the 2014 and 2015 editions of the NCAAs and also did so at the 2015 NCAA Indoors, where a 17.37m triple was the best indoor jump that year.

He won the 2015 US outdoor title by soaring out to a wind-assisted 8.68m, also registering his legal PB of 8.39m. He also took triple jump silver and competed at the Worlds in both events.

The following year he showed some of his best form yet as he leaped 8.38m at the start of the indoor season and improved his PB to 8.41m – a 2017 world indoor lead – to win at the US Championships. An 8.28m jump at the World Indoors in Portland gave him his first global honour.

The summer looked equally promising when an 8.42m PB for fourth at the US Championships qualified him for the Olympics, but he had to pull out of Rio due to injury.

He took silver at the 2017 national championships to again be picked for the Worlds, although for the third occasion in succession he went out in qualifying.
