Eliza McCartney following her bronze medal success at the Rio Olympic Games was able to maintain her consistency with achieving a Silver medal in the Women’s Pole Vault Final at the Commonwealth Games with a clearance at 4.70m.  This is New Zealand’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s pole vault.

After an intense competition with the Canadian Alysha Newman, all was touch and go until Alysha Newman matched the height and then progress ahead to clear 4.75m.  McCartney had to clear 4.80m in order to take the win and with only two attempts left, both saw her rise above the bar only to catch the bar on her way down each time.

Australian Nina Kennedy finished third at 4.60m.

McCartney, 21 has become such a talent in the sport and we are excited to see what’s more to come as it is very clear this kiwi can definitely keep her cool under pressure.
